for so many of us, we understand communion to be about the death…and it is, but it’s also about the life. it is about the fact that jesus came as a body, and you must have a body in order to give your body away. the most extraordinary thing that this god did was he came in the incarnation, as a body, and he shares the exact same kind of body that you have, so he knows exactly the kind of joy and the kind of pain, the kind of agony and the kind of ecstasy that every single one of us in this room shares. this is a god who is close to you. and so when you experience consuming the body and the blood, it is a union with this god who shared your body. and the gift of that is that you are not alone. you’re not alone.
