ultimately, jesus doesn’t hand us a system or a doctrine or a whole bunch of words. he hands us something that we do together. we take this bread, and we dip it in this cup, and it reminds us where that firm center is. he can handle all of the diversity, all of the agreement and disagreement, all of the various opinions—we can do all that. that’s no problem when you have the center that never lets you down.
…we take the bread and you say to each other, ‘this is the body of christ, broken for us.’ and then, together, you dip it in the cup and you say to each other, ‘this is the blood of christ, shed for us. this is the body of christ, broken for us. this is the blood of christ, shed for us.’ and what jesus says is that he meets you there. he meets you there in ways that defy language and yet we can put words at times to this profound sense that he won’t leave us. he won’t desert us. he won’t let us down.”
